About

SJ is an underwater and expedition photographer based in High Springs, Florida, at the centre of one of the densest concentrations of freshwater springs and underwater cave systems in the world.

Born in the UK and raised in Berlin, she has been making photographs since the age of ten – first documenting the city around her, then moving through event and commercial work before finding her way underwater. She began shooting in the cave systems of Mexico in 2015 with borrowed equipment, took on her first paid underwater work in 2018, and has since contributed to cave exploration and expedition projects internationally. Recent projects include Phantom Springs in West Texas – the deepest known underwater cave in the US – with the Karst Underwater Research team; Phreatic's exploration of Su Gologone in Sardinia; and the Beyond the Sump expedition to the Huautla resurgence in Mexico.

Her clients include Shearwater Research, Halcyon, Fathom, Doxa, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Lost River Cave (Bowling Green, Kentucky), and the Cenotes of Mayakoba exploration project.

SJ is an active hypoxic CCR technical and cave diver. The photography and the diving are not separate skills but a single practice – the technical credibility is what makes the imagery possible, and the visual training is what makes it worth looking at.
